Merry Christmas to the Furrier Among Us!

Merry Christmas to the dogs of Hurricane Sandy!
~~with love, the Mendenhall Flying Lions Club, the Petco of Juneau, and our very own Lion Virginia Ray!

The Petco of Juneau donated a whole bunch of brand new holiday dog toys to the MFLC for the Diabetes Auction in November.  There were so many of them that we decided to put together a few baskets for the auction and then come up with a plan to find a good home for the rest of them.  Our very own Lion Virginia Ray (now living in Washington) just happens to be an avid animal rescue volunteer and said "I'll find a home for them!"  And boy, did she!

The Guardians of Rescue out of Smithtown, NY has been working around the clock to rescue, save and care for hundreds of pets stranded, injured or homeless due to Hurricane Sandy.  We're talking about amazing volunteers doing amazing things...heroic things...to rescue these animals.  They put out a call for pet food, cat litter, dog toys, etc. and the Mendenhall Flying Lions Club answered...just in time for Christmas!  2 giant boxes, full of all things that squeak, made the journey from little 'ol Juneau, Alaska to their New York home.

Find out more about this great group of volunteers:  http://guardiansofrescue.org.  They also have a Facebook page where you can see daily posts of their activities.  Tissues recommended.

It's a great day to be a Lion!  We serve!
Over 100 new stuffed dog toys filled 2 large boxes!

Lion President Joey mailing very, very large boxes.  The Postmaster noticed that the boxes squeaked when pushed! :)

And here's a wonderful e-mail from a New York resident who heard about our project:

Dear Flying Lions,
I just saw on my Facebook page that Guardians of Rescue posted that you guys sent 2 boxes of toys to us here on Long Island! I am not a member, just a reader and I can’ t  thank you enough for remembering our animals after super Storm sandy!!!! Guardians of Rescue has been amazing to help save and find foster home for so many animals who have been displaced or owners displaced.  I can’t imagine being separated from my babes!  I am humbled by your generosity and from such a distance for a very underserved group. Thank you for remembering our pets!!!! Merry Christmas!!!!
Love and Peace,
Ann Bliss

49A MidWinter in Juneau Was A Hit!

Hello and Happy Thanksgiving Weekend!
Just 2 short weeks ago, District 49A Lions gathered in Juneau to conduct Lions business, learn more about Lions operations and socialize with other wonderful dedicated Lions. It was a fantastic opportunity to get together with so many super Lions/volunteers who also work hard to improve conditions in their respective community's as well as support many Lions Clubs International programs.
The intent of this email is to send each and every one of you a personal "Thank You" for taking the time out of you very busy lives to come to Juneau and share your club's stories, personal experiences and knowledge about Lions.  We are all better Lions thanks to you!

As many know, just days before our MidWinter began, an apartment building next door to the hotel caught fire and displaced 60 families.  The great Lions of District 49A dug deep and collectively contributed $5,550 to the American Red Cross of Southeast to assist these families.  Those checks have been delivered and are doing great works here in Juneau already...just in time for Thanksgiving.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

4th of July Parade Grounds Concessions Was A Hit!

That's a fine looking coffee station if we do say so ourselves!
Year three of selling donuts, coffee, bagels and more to the hard working volunteers preparing to march in the Juneau parade was a success!  The project also kicked off the Mendenhall Flying Lion's teaming up to "adopt" Boy Scout Troop 247 run by Allan Butner.  The Scouts came in uniform and helped peddle goodies around the parade set-up area...and did a great job helping to raise charity money for the Lions.

Lions Chad, Joe, Mike A. and Marilyn posing with our wonderful new Boy Scouts (and great volunteers).
Thanks to our wonderful local donors who were instrumental in making this happen:  Costco, Heritage Coffee Company, Cycle Alaska, Boy Scout Troop 247 and another local donor who asked to remain anonymous....but those of you who came to our station know very much who that was.

Off to more Lions projects in Juneau.

Induction of New Board

Last night we installed our new Board of Directors:

Lion Joey Ausel -- Club President
Lion Joe Molburg-- Vice President
Lion Becky Allison -- Secretary
Lion Mike Allison -- Treasurer
Lion Neil Atkinson-- Director
Lion Stella Brown -- Director
Lion Mike Norton -- Past President

Lion Chad Ausel was out of town but he's our new Membership Chairman and will be inducted at a later date.  We still need to appoint our Tail Twister.

Looks like a good group of Lions to run the Club this next year! Congratulations to all of you!

4th of July Vendor

This will be our third year participating in the 4th of July parade.  No, we won't be marching down the streets of Juneau wearing silly getup's, but we will be peddling our wares.  It came to our attention that those waiting in the staging area with their "floats" didn't have access to any coffee or water while they waited. A  member of our club came up with the idea to sell coffee, water, and other drinks as well as snacks.  Local bakeries donate day-old goods and coffee and members have a good time on this typically-sunny day in Juneau.  Proceeds go to the Mendenhall Charities Account.  See you there!

Donation

S.A.I.L. approached us, on a local woman's behalf, asking for financial assistance or miles to help this person return to Juneau.  She's had two coronary transplants and is presently in Seattle having a third one.  Hopefully, the transplant won't be rejected again.

The Club approved a donation of $250 towards an airline ticket to return home.

Outreach Screenings

Because Lions can't be everywhere at all times.... The Mendenhall Flying Lions have encouraged training on the PlusOptiX Vision Screener by members of the public.  We have reached out and trained school nurses as well as nurses in the public health arena who are able to provide screening when we are otherwise not available.  Specifically, we have trained a couple nurses who are responsible for health fairs throughout SE Alaska.  As such, they are able to take the vision screener with them to these health fairs and provide screening on our behalf.  This is a win-win situation because Lion volunteers may not otherwise be available.

This last month, Sonja Engle, Public Health Nurse, has taken the screener to Hoonah and Pelican and screened 36 residents with 4 referrals.  We appreciate all that Sonja does for the Club and the communities of Alaska.

Litter Clean Up

We had our spring Litter Clean Up this month.  We're responsible for keeping the road to the Glacier clean of trash, of which there is plenty!  This road is traveled by locals, tourists, walkers, bicycle riders, joggers, and tour buses and gets plenty of traffic which results in plenty of litter.  This activity yielded about seven bags of trash!

Thanks to everyone who showed up and helped on this cloudy day!

Plant a Tree Project

The Mendenhall Flying Lions recently participated in International President Tam's Plant a Million Trees program by planting six green ash trees at the Juneau Skate Park.  Ed Buyarski of Ed's Edible Plants donated the trees and Terry Hinkley of the City and Borough helped locate a site for us to plant the trees.

It was a rainy day.... but coffee and donuts lured seven Lions and two young children out to help plant the trees.  We had a good time and good fellowship and all the trees were planted in about an hour's time. This was but a small piece of the 9.7 million trees that have already been planted!

Vision Screening--Glacier Baptist Academy

We're excited to be making headway in screening preschool kids this year.  Glacier Baptist was our second school this spring.  This was scheduled as a two-day event as we're working with two different  age groups and some go one day and others another.  We screened 74 three to five year olds and referred seven.  Thanks to Lion Neil for helping out with this event.

4th Cabinet Meeting

I attended the 4th Cabinet Meeting at Valdez this past week.  This was a great opportunity to receive training in areas of developing your Lions' Club, recruiting new members, running a project, and various other valuable information.  It's also a great time to meet up with old Lion friends from around the state and elsewhere.

The best part of this cabinet meeting is the training.  There's so much to learn in the world of Lions and I feel the training and contacts we receive at any convention or meeting is invaluable to expanding our club and developing projects so they run efficiently.  I especially enjoy talking to other Lions about their projects, their trials and tribulations, and all the fun parts of everything they do.

The 4th Cabinet Meeting is the last gathering of the Lions' calendar year.  One of the highlights of this night is award presentation and we were proud to have our own Club Secretary, Lion Joey Ausel, recognized as Secretary of the Year for District 49A.  Congratulations, Lion Joey!  You do a great job and definitely deserved it!

I'd like to encourage all Lion members to attempt to get to at least one convention or cabinet meeting a year and bring back information to share with other members of the club.

A Thank You

The Lions motto is We Serve!  And we do it because we want to.  Because we want to make a difference.   For no other reason.

But our rewards are many.

For the thank you from the mother who didn't know her child couldn't see....
For the homeless person who gets funding for glasses that he might not have otherwise been able to afford....
For helping to pay a young man's medical expenses after having surgery to save his sight....
For giving the gift of a bicycle to a young child who might otherwise have a grim Christmas....

Yes, our rewards are many.

But take a look at the following sequence of pictures.
This is my granddaughter.
We went to her preschool earlier this month and did vision screening.
The kids made this "thank you" for us.

The reward is in the excitement and joy on her face as she "presents" this to us on behalf of her class.

THIS is why we do what we do!

Peddling Along

Earlier this year, Janet L. of S.A.I.L. (SE Alaska Independent Living) was a guest speaker at one of our meetings.  S.A.I.L. is a non-profit organization that assists people with low vision and other challenges, to live independently.  Janet came to our meeting to explain what S.A.I.L. does and to see if there was an opportunity for us to work together.

Yesterday, out of the blue, I heard from Janet.  She started telling me about an older man who had suffered a head injury and is now disabled.  He was looking for a mode of transportation where he could also get some exercise.  Janet was using me as a sounding board to see if I knew where she might find one!

Little did she know that she hit the nail on the head by calling the Mendenhall Flying Lions because it just so happens we have 22 bicycles being restored as part of our Bicycle Recycle Project!  A quick call to Lion Mike A. (who heads up our bicycle project) and we're good to deliver a bike in the next couple days!

Teams working together!

Busted

Our Tail Twister, Lion Chad, is johnny on the spot!  He doesn't let us get away with anything.  Phone on during a meeting?  Give him a buck!  Talk out of turn during a meeting?  Give him a buck!  Start the meeting late?  Give him a buck!  Yes, I was guilty at this week's meeting and started two minutes late!

Lion Chad has had events at most every meeting and has added considerably to the Tail Twister account!  Thank you, Lion Chad, for doing a great job as Tail Twister and Lion Tamer!

Lion Coco and the KanakAttack

While on vacation on Kauai recently, I had the privilege of attending a breakfast meeting of the North Shore Lions Club.  This is an active group of about 43 Lions.  Their main fundraiser is a pancake breakfast with hula dancers!  I think we all need to do one of those!

I met one of their more colorful members--Lion Coco--who is a Native Hawaiian, friendly, and the entertainer of the Club! Lion Coco performs at the Tahiti Nui restaurant and bar in Hanalei (same place Puff the Magic Dragon was filmed) and invited us to join him.

We're walking downtown Hanalei, which consists of about two blocks, trying to find him, when we were directed to what I would describe as a shack... only to wonder if we really DID want to go inside.... A good lesson was learned that night--don't judge a book by its cover!  Not only did we find Lion Coco (and his nephew Darrell), but he found us a seat right up front where we got to enjoy his singing for the next few hours as well as eat the best meal of our trip.

We'll never forget our visit to the Tahiti Nui restaurant and our new friend in Lion Coco.  And if you get a chance to see the movie, The Descendants.... that would be Lion Coco singing in the bar towards the end of the movie--the one with the white hair!  Check it out!

Aloha!

Vision Screening--Auke Bay Co-op

We broke the ice with pre-schools in town this week and provided vision screening at Auke Bay Co-op Preschool (Chapel by the Lake).  This was achieved through connections with my grandaughter who goes to preschool there.

This was a two-day event because it covered two age groups.  Some kids went Tuesday/Wednesday (ages 3 and 4) and the older kids (ages 4 and 5) went Monday/Wednesday/and Friday.  Lions Neil, Joe, Mal, and myself screened 30 pre-schoolers and referred 3.  Parents of two of the referrals suspected their child's eyes were bad, but hadn't pursued it.  The other referral was so far outside the parameters of the machine that we couldn't get a reading!  Two of the children were scared and wouldn't let us test their eyes.  We even had two "drop ins" (toddlers) who came with the Administrator of the school and one of the parents.

Each child received a smiley face sticker after their screening and we're pleased to announce that the winning colors were pink and purple!

Each day took a little over an hour of screening, which computes to about two minutes per child.  This included the data entry time which went quickly because Ms. Trish gave us the name of the next child as the previous one was sitting so we could enter the data early and be ready to screen when the child sat down.  The Administrator of the pre-school has asked that we return next year.

All in all, this was a great screening event!

About Us

First I wanted to thank all the Lions that showed up at the Thomas McRae fundraiser last Saturday.  We estimated there to be well over 500 people who showed up to support Staff Sargeant McRae and his family.  It was a good event.

Back to the Mendenhall Flying Lions, we would like to announce that Lions Joe and Marilyn are getting married on the island of Hawaii!  Congratulations to the two of you, and we look forward to having a celebratory drink with you in a few days!

Also, this month, Lion Rosemary celebrated her 19th year of Lionism.  Thank you, Lion Rosemary for all your years of service.  President Mike just celebrated his 4th year as a Lion and, I know is very thankful to Lion Mal for inviting him into the Club.  Lion Linda will also be celebrating three years on the 18th and we certainly appreciate all she does for the Club and community as well.  Thank you, Lions Mike and Linda!

There won't be any updates for three weeks as President Mike is taking this blogger to Hawaii!  We'll be in touch on our return.  Later!  Nancy

Webinar: Managing a Service Project

Lions Clubs International provides all of us a unique opportunity to attend valuable training on-line.  They usually offer three different dates/times to fit our schedules.  I highly recommend all Lions attend these on-line classes whenever possible.

Yesterday morning, I had an opportunity to "attend" my third Webinar:  Managing a Service Project.  They provided excellent information and it gave me insight into what our Club could improve on.

The class covered the Service Project Management Process which included Selecting the Right Service Project, Defining the Project, Planning the Project, the Execution, and finally the Evaluation of the Completed Project.  I'm looking forward to our next project so we can put these good ideas to use.
