Current Projects:
Bicycle Safety Rodeo: The Bicycle Safety Rodeo takes place in May with the Shepherd of the Valley Church, Mendenhall Flying Lions, Juneau Police, and Cycle Alaska, get together to teach bicycle safety and ensure all bikes are in good operating condition. The rodeo consists of a safety course where children are taught how to ride safely and maintain their balance and control. If they don't have a bike helmet, one is given to them. Inside, hot dogs are served and other fun and games.
USS Juneau Memorial Service: It was a blustery day in Juneau when members of the military, veterans organizations, veterans, Lions, and the public joined together to pay respect to the USS Juneau on the docks of Juneau.
USS Juneau Silver Punch Bowl: On February 14, 2016, the original silver punch bowl set was presented to the people of Juneau. It is on loan from the U.S. Navy for ten years.
Glory Hole Lunch: We serve lunch to the homeless and hungry at our local emergency shelter, The Glory Hole.
Annual BBQ:
Held in November, this is one of our largest fundraisers of the
year.
All proceeds go directly to the American Diabetes Association, Alaska
Branch. Volunteers
and Lions get up before the crack of dawn to fire the smoker up and spend 6 or 7
hours smoking the ribs to perfection. Dinner consists of ribs, coleslaw, and
baked beans.
Light Flights: Some
time just before Christmas, you'll find Lion members and volunteers huddling
around outside in the cold winter weather, trying to keep warm. It doesn't
matter if the temps are in the low teens and the Taku Winds are blowing
sideways, this annual fundraiser always brings a smile to the participants.
With the cooperation of Coastal Helicopters who donate their time, copters, and
fuel, we take passengers on a helicopter ride over the Mendenhall Valley to view
Christmas lights. We average about 300 passengers a year, during a four-hour
period. The proceeds from this event are shared with Coastal Helicopters whose chosen charity is the Children's Tumor Foundation and our share of the proceeds
goes into our Sight Projects Fund.
Vision Screening:
Our most important service project is offering vision screening to children. We use a PlusOptix Vision Screener that takes a picture of the child's eye. There's no fooling the computer and we have found several children who had eye problems and their parents were not aware. We are presently making our way into the school district in Juneau and throughout Southeast.
Litter Pick Up:
There's a stretch of road, two miles long, that takes you to the Mendenhall
Glacier. It's a popular road with walkers, dog walkers, bicyclers, and
tourists. As such, it accumulates trash. Our members gather three times a year
to pick up trash and to keep our biggest tourist attraction beautiful! Come
Spring, Summer, or Fall, you will find members of the Mendenhall Flying Lions
along the road, picking up trash.
4th of July Vendor:
If you ask anyone in Juneau if it'll be sunny for the 4th of July Parade, they
will tell you, "yes!" This is a perfect time for Lions to provide a service and
make a little money for our Sight Projects Fund as well. We provide coffee,
pastries, and water to the parade participants, all donated by local
businesses, for $1.00 each.
