USS Juneau: Private Reception

Last night was the unveiling of the Presentation Silver and what an event it was!  Thank you, again, to International Director Lewis Quinn for speaking at this event about Lions, who we are, and what we do.  THIS is what we do.  We make a difference.
This night was important in more ways than one.  Not only did the USS Juneau Presentation Silver make it back home, but it brought people together who have a connection with the USS Juneau and this was a night of remembering.  Good memories.  Bad memories.  Unforgotten memories of a lifetime ago.

There's so many to thank for making this event possible.  We greatly appreciate that Captain Eugene Bailey and his wife, Juanita, took time to help us celebrate this historical event.

International Director Lewis Quinn and Captain Bailey's Visit

We had the honor of entertaining International Director Lewis Quinn during his visit to Juneau to attend the festivities leading up to the Unveiling Ceremony of the USS Juneau Presentation Silver.

Last night's social took place at the Buoy Deck in the Coast Guard Station.  Veterans and Active Duty were invited from all branches of the military along with staff from the Juneau-Douglas City Museum, and Lions.

Captain Eugene Bailey was our special guest, with his wife, Juanita, who flew to Juneau solely for the unveiling of the Presentation Silver. Captain Bailey was the first Captain to bring the third USS  Juneau named for our city to its namesake port.

This celebration respected and honored the 697 sailors and crew that perished at the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942 when a Japanese torpedo hit the USS Juneau CL-52 and sunk it.  Ten survived for eight days in shark-infested waters before being rescued.

Lion Donna Hurley has been eating, breathing, and sleeping USS Juneau for years now and most recently the last year as she pulled the coming event to a head.  Yet, she still had time to create a keepsake that represented the three USS Juneau ships.

Lions Donna Hurley and Tom Dawson with their "visual" story:   The long string of pearls represents the 697 officers and crew that died when the USS Juneau was torpedoed and sunk; the shorter string represents the ones left adrift in shark-infested waters for eight days before being rescued; and the shortest string of pearls representing the ten who were rescued.
The longest string 532 men who died onboard, second string 165 men blown off ship into water,
and 3rd string of 14, 4 who lived by transfer and 10 who survived 8 days in water.

ID Lewis received a dome that holds 3 pearls, one for each ship named for Juneau
with an angel's wing to remind us that we are the guardians of their memories.

Captain Bailey of the USS Juneau LPD10

Captain Bailey and his wife, Juanita, are in Juneau participating in the Unveiling Ceremony of the USS Juneau Presentation Silver at the City Museum.  Captain Bailey was the Captain of the third USS Juneau LPD-10.

The USS Juneau CL52 was a Light Cruiser that sunk during the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942 after it was hit by a torpedo.  Approximately 150 to 180 men were blown off the ship into the water. It took less than 30 seconds for the ship to sink with 528 crewmen still aboard. Most of the surviving were injured, all were covered in oil, and in shark infested waters. By the time rescue efforts arrived eight days later, only 10 survived.

Having Captain Bailey in town for this historical event is an honor.

Unveiling Ceremony!

It won't be long now until the unveiling of the Presentation Silver!

What, you ask?

Many many years ago, the children of Juneau saved their lunch money in order to purchase a silver punch bowl to present to the USS Juneau.

The Presentation Silver was put into storage before the USS Juneau was sent to war in 1942 and was only recently located with the help of Senator Lisa Murkowski, the U.S. Navy, and Lion Donna Hurley.

It has come home to rest where it will be on display at the City Museum for the next ten years.

The Juneau Mendenhall Flying Lions Club and the City Museum invite the public to its official unveiling.

We hope to see everyone there for this historical event.

The USS Juneau Silver Service Returns Home, Part I

Our Club has been particularly busy in the last couple months working on a project that will come to head soon.  You've probably been reading about it in different newspapers in Alaska and even down South.

Lion Donna Hurley is the force behind this project and would love nothing more than to sit and chat with you about the USS Juneau, which is her passion.

The Juneau Empire covered the story first on January 14, 2016 with their story, The USS Juneau Silver Service Returns Home.  The Associated Press picked up the story and it's been hitting the news stands around the state ever since!

Here's some links to the story around the country:
We will be posting more about this incredible journey in the days to come.  Stay tuned!

Lunch at the Glory Hole

As part of the World Wide Week of Service, Fight Hunger and Poverty, the Juneau Mendenhall Flying Lions provided and served lunch at our local emergency shelter.
Lions Tom Dawson, Mukhya and Hari Dev Khalsa, and Donna Hurley
Lion Donna Hurley was the lead on this project and did a super job!  Our menu was simple but delicious:  baked King Salmon, balsamic rice, peas, Hawaiian rolls, and applesauce and peaches for dessert.
Lion Tommy Dawson
A huge thank you to Jerry's Meats for giving us a good discount on fresh caught winter King!

Lions Hari Dev Khalsa, Tom Dawson, and Mukhya Khalsa
We served about 30 men and women, some coming back for thirds!  And who could blame them!  We had planned for many more so had plenty to spare.

Lions couldn't remember if we've ever served at this homeless/emergency shelter before so it is a good "first" and one I hope we consider doing over and over again.
