Captain Bailey of the USS Juneau LPD10

Captain Bailey and his wife, Juanita, are in Juneau participating in the Unveiling Ceremony of the USS Juneau Presentation Silver at the City Museum.  Captain Bailey was the Captain of the third USS Juneau LPD-10.

The USS Juneau CL52 was a Light Cruiser that sunk during the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942 after it was hit by a torpedo.  Approximately 150 to 180 men were blown off the ship into the water. It took less than 30 seconds for the ship to sink with 528 crewmen still aboard. Most of the surviving were injured, all were covered in oil, and in shark infested waters. By the time rescue efforts arrived eight days later, only 10 survived.

Having Captain Bailey in town for this historical event is an honor.
