Induction of 2015-2016 Officers

It seems like just yesterday when I was posting our induction for this year at a social at Lion Neil Atkinson's home.  And, now, here we are again.

District Governor Elect Lion Mike Brown was in town this past weekend to meet members and share his plans for the coming year, and this was a great opportunity to have him induct our incoming officers for 2015-2016.  He agreed!

Left to right, front row:  DG Elect Lion Mike Brown (from Kodiak), Lion Mukhya Khah (incoming Secretary), Lion Nancy Norton (incoming Membership Chair), Lion Donna Hurley (Vice President), Lion Bob Hurley (incoming 2 Year Director).  Back row:  Lion Mike Norton (President), Lion Tom Dawson (Tailtwister), and Lion Allen (Treasurer).  Not shown is our Immediate Past President Lion Mike Allison.

We have a GREAT group of officers for the 2015-2016 year!

When an Incoming DG Visits

Living in Southeast Alaska can leave one feeling isolated from the rest of the state at times.

And this is true for Lions.  It's more difficult to build a relationship with members from other local clubs because there might not be any nearby.  Attending new charters, fundraising events, and even regular club meetings is difficult to near impossible.

So we travel to conventions and conferences to be a part of the bigger picture, to meet new Lions, to meet up with old friends, to have a connection.

But when a Lion comes to Juneau to see us, it's always an honor and helps bridge that gap a little.

We had the privilege of entertaining District Governor Elect Lion Mike Brown this last weekend.  TWO WHOLE DAYS worth of picking his brain, hearing his goals for this coming Lion year, laughing, and feeling a part of the bigger picture.  It was great!

While here, the Mendenhall Flying Lions had a social where members could meet Lion Mike Brown and learn, first hand, what his year is going to be like.  We also took advantage of so many members in one place and had our end-of-year social where Lion President Mike gave out awards.   Below is Lion Allen Butner receiving a much deserved award for all his hard work in changing banking institutes.

End of year awards were presented to members.  All Lions received a Centennial pin for their 100% attendance award, Lion Neil Atkinson received a camouflage hat because he's already received every award imaginable, and Lion Nancy received Lion of the Year award for MFLC.

DG Elect Lion Mike also inducted incoming officers.  As you can tell, we all take our roles very seriously!

It was a great evening of fun!  Thanks to Lion Mike Brown for making it special and to all members who took time out of their busy schedules to join us!

During our down time, we did some sight seeing, met up with a couple members from the Juneau Lions Club, and got a better idea of what our next Lion year is going to be like.  Fun!

Another successful Lion year almost over!

First Induction of 2015

We're all so busy in our real lives, that it's always nice when we can gather together and celebrate.

And that's just what we did Saturday night.

Of course, we combined business with pleasure as Lion Donna Hurley was inducted as Vice President.  Lion Becky Allison stepped down as Secretary recently due to personal reasons, and Lion Nancy Norton stepped into the Secretary position, leaving the Vice President position open.

We appreciate that Lion Donna stepped up and stepped into this position for the remainder of the year.

We also had the pleasure of inducting our two newest members, Lions Hari Dev and Mukhya Khalsa.

Lion Allen Butner is their sponsor and a great mentor to them!

A huge thanks to Lions Bob and Donna Hurley for opening their home and providing such a wonderful spread of good foods.  Course, we brought some pretty good dishes as well.  One thing we do well is cook!

Induction of New Officers 2014-2015

We inducted incoming officers at last week's meeting.  Most of us were there, but a couple were otherwise busy.

Lion Mike Norton, President

Lion Becky Allison, Secretary

Lion Allen Butner, Treasurer

Lion Neil Atkinson, Membership Chair

Lion Nancy Norton, Vice President

Lion Tommy Dawson, Lion Tamer/Tail Twister

We have a great team of officers coming on board July 1, who are excited about doing their jobs!

Lion Mike N. has indicated there will be some changes this next year and Lion Tommy is already planning on increasing our Tail Twister account considerably!  Lion Allen is going to bring our financial records into the 21st century and Lion Neil is planning on joint orientation of new members with the Juneau Club.  This is just some of what you can expect this next year!

Please welcome the 2014-15 officers!

Winter Social

If you were planning a social event, your list might look something like this:

Food:  check
Drinks:   check
Members Invited:  check
Induct New Member:  check
Invite Potential New Members:  check

Yes, these are the key elements to a successful social event!

Food, music, a little something to drink....

Good friends, new friends.

Lion Neil A. and his wife, Cari, hosted last night's social.  It had everything you needed, PLUS their dog, Maggie!  (Who doesn't love a well-behaved dog?!)

The theme was Mexican and Cari went all out with tacos, homemade salsa, and side dishes.

Hmmmm, this shouldn't be TOO hot....!
Lion Mike had hair before tasting this hot HOT sauce!

We had several guests that are considering joining our Club.

This is Nolan and Donna.  Nolan helps out at Light Flights each year so he's had a little taste of what we do.  Donna made her debut at Light Flights this year  and helped with the Safety Check speel.

Sonny and John were also guests.  We met them AT Light Flights while they were standing in line waiting for their turn and they expressed an interest in learning about our club.  So here they are!  We hope last night was just what they were looking for and we can bring them into the club as well.

Lion President Mike A., Lions Neil and Marilyn enjoying fellowship and food.

Lion Tommy and guest Sonny getting to know each other.

As with any good party, there was plenty of food!  And the chatter quieted considerably as everyone enjoyed their meal.

Lion Joe, also making friends with guest Sonny.

Well, this just looks like double trouble here.... Lion President Mike A. and new Lion Soapy.

Jill (Lion Soapy's wife) is our unofficial photographer!  Maybe one day she'll become our official photographer!  John, our guest, is getting to know everyone.

Eating, drinking, and visiting wasn't the only thing on our agenda.  It was our night to give new Lion Soapy a hard time....  But by the looks of this, it might be Lion Soapy giving the hard time!

Eventually the induction took place and Lion Mike presented Lion Soapy with his membership pin.  It was put on upside down and Lion Soapy was told he could turn it right side AFTER he did a good deed for someone.

So he offered to take the trash out for Cari and of course she took him up his offer!  Our guest, John, offered to take out the trash next month--get a "one up" for when he becomes a member!

Lion Neil welcomed him aboard, and the rest is now history.

It was a great evening, a fun evening.  We met new friends.  We inducted a new member.  And possibly got four new members out of the evening.  It doesn't get much better than that.

End of Year Social and Installation of New Officers

The Mendenhall Flying Lions is getting ready to say goodbye to their 2012-2013 Lions' year and hello to a new year.  This has been a great year with record fundraising efforts in the barbeque and auction and Night Flights.  Unprecedented amounts were raised.  But it's time to pass the baton and see what the new team has to offer.

Tonight was the Club's end-of-year party.  Lions Chad and Joey hosted the event while the rest of us just showed up, relaxed, and visited.  What a deal!

It was also a night of inducting the new officers. Lion Allen is the new Tail Twister.  You can tell by his demeanor that he's going to take his job seriously and bring some fun and order to this group!

Lion Mike is a 2 Year Director.  I'm not certain what that means.... Neil.... but I'll figure it out by the next time we meet.  ;)

Next Lion Neil inducted himself as Membership Director!  Silly man. In this position he will assist in bringing qualified members into the club.

Lion Joe is the new Treasurer.  He's taken the training and is biting at the bit to get going!  Aren't ya, Joe?

This is Lion Becky's second year as Secretary.  Her list of duties is the longest! She did a bang up job last year and won the Secretary of the Year award for District 49!!  She's going to be a hard act to follow....

Next up was Lion Mike A.  Or Mr. President.  I don't know if he has any idea what he's gotten himself into.... but he'll figure it out soon enough and will be a great President.

Not all the new officers were in attendance.  Lion Bob H. will be the 1 Year Director and Lion Tommy the 1st Vice President.

Thanks to all who agreed to serve for the 2013-2014 Lion year!  I predict a good year for the Mendenhall Flying Lions!
