JOINT SIGHT COMMITTEE

The Capital Area Lions Joint Sight Conservation Committee (aka Joint Sight Committee) is composed of Lion members from the Juneau Lions Club and the Juneau Mendenhall Flying Lions Club.  The purpose of the committee is to:
  • provide glasses to the needy, as determined by the committee, particularly children of school age;
  • provide assistance for the visually impaired;
  • cooperate with other organizations interested in sight conservation; and
  • further legislation for the visually impaired in the Capital area.
The Joint Sight Committee assists the community with financial assistance for eye exams and eyeglasses when one cannot afford them and after certain criteria have been met.  See the FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE section below for more information.  We also collect and recycle used eyeglasses for those in need.

EYEGLASS RECYCLE PROJECT:
Did you know that Lions around the world collect old, unwanted eyeglasses?  It's all part of the Lions Clubs International program, Recycle for Sight

We collect eyeglasses of all types:  single lenses, trifocals, broken glasses, prescription and nonprescription, reading glasses or sunglasses. We collect them all!  We also take any cases that are no longer needed.

The donated glasses are shipped to the Aurora Borealis Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center in North Pole, Alaska, where they will be cleaned, categorized by prescription, and prepared for distribution to needy people around the world.  Including Alaska.

We ask people to go through their dresser drawers, desks, filing cabinet, kitchen table, cabin, boat, car, garage, bedside table, and any where else they might have left a pair of glasses they no longer need and bring them to one of the six collection sites in Juneau
